Cornbread is an old American recipe and one of the classics in the Southern states. It is a dense, slightly sweet bread that Americans often eat with butter, as a side dish, or with barbecue.

Ingredients

– 140 g cornmeal
– 2 eggs
– 120 g wheat flour
– 1 teaspoon baking powder
– 115 g butter
– 120 g white sugar
– 235 ml buttermilk
– 1 pinch of salt

Method

Melt the butter, then add the sugar and stir until it is fully dissolved. Add the two eggs and whisk until the mixture is smooth.

Pour in the buttermilk and mix well. In another bowl, combine the two sifted flours, the baking powder, and the salt.

Add the dry mixture little by little to the bowl containing the eggs, sugar, and butter. Pour the batter into a buttered round or square pan.

Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, checking regularly. When the cornbread is done, the blade of a knife inserted in the center should come out dry.

This bread is best enjoyed warm or slightly warm. Enjoy!
