This dense ring-shaped bread is extremely popular in the United States and even has its own national day on February 9. Bagels are often eaten with cream cheese and salmon, but today they come with all kinds of fillings. If you want to try homemade bagels, here is an easy and delicious recipe.

Ingredients

– 500 g flour
– 15 cl warm milk
– 10 cl warm water
– 15 g fresh baker’s yeast
– 10 g salt
– 10 g sugar
– 1 whole egg and 2 egg whites

Method

Dissolve the yeast in 5 cl of warm water and let it rest for 5 minutes. In a large bowl, mix the flour, milk, the remaining water, salt, sugar, and the beaten egg whites. Add the yeast and knead well for about 10 minutes.

Cover the dough with a damp cloth, preferably in a warm place, and let it rise for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Once the dough has risen well, punch it down several times to remove the air.

Divide the dough into small balls and make a hole in the middle of each one to form the bagel shape. Cover them again with a damp cloth and leave them to rise for 10 more minutes.

Bring a pot of water to a boil and poach the bagels one at a time. Place the poached bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, brush them with egg yolk, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Filling ideas: cream cheese, salmon, vegetables, cheddar, mozzarella, avocado, tuna, ham, turkey, chicken, tomatoes, peanut butter, jam, and more.

Enjoy your bagels!
