Apple Pie: The Dessert Made in the USA
You probably already know the famous and iconic American apple tart called apple pie. It is a fairly simple recipe that looks like a double-crust pie and can be enjoyed with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, just like in American movies.
I found this apple pie recipe on several websites, and since it is really good, I am sharing it with you in turn. With this recipe, you will also make your own pie crust from scratch.
Ingredients for the crust
– 500 g flour (I chose whole wheat flour for my version)
– 250 g unsalted butter
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 50 g powdered sugar
– 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
– 7 to 9 tablespoons water (depending on the consistency of your dough while kneading)
Ingredients for the filling
– 6 to 8 apples of any variety (if you are unsure, choose Golden apples because their sweet flesh works very well in pies)
– 100 g brown sugar
– 1 tablespoon cinnamon
– 1 vanilla pod or 1 capful vanilla extract
– 50 g butter
– 2 tablespoons cornstarch
– 2 tablespoons lemon juice
Preparing the crust
Put the flour, salt, and powdered sugar into a bowl, mix, and make a well. Cut the softened butter into pieces and place them in the well. Mix everything by hand until you get a sandy texture. Then add the apple cider vinegar or lemon juice and the water. Continue mixing by hand until a smooth dough forms.
Shape the dough into a ball, wrap it, and refrigerate it for 1 hour.
Preparing the filling
Peel the apples and cut them into medium-sized pieces. Place them in a dish and mix them with the brown sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. Melt the butter in a frying pan, then add the apple mixture. Cook until the apple pieces are caramelized, then add the cornstarch and lemon juice. Let everything cook for a few more minutes over low heat.
Assembling the apple pie
Take the pie dough out of the refrigerator and let it soften for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, butter and flour a cake pan. Cut the dough into two equal parts. Roll out the first part and place it in the prepared pan. Prick the bottom with a fork and pour the apple filling over it.
Then roll out the second piece of dough and place it over the filling, sealing the edges with the bottom crust. Make a few cuts on top of the apple pie and brush the crust with egg yolk. Finish by sprinkling a little brown sugar on top.
Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C / 350°F for 40 minutes. You can enjoy it warm or cold, on its own or with mascarpone whipped cream, for example.
Enjoy!
