American supermarkets are a huge subject: fascinating, practical, sometimes confusing, and always full of surprises. The variety of products sold in the United States is enormous, and shopping habits can feel very different from what many Europeans are used to. To begin with, a small historical note: the modern American supermarket emerged in the 1930s, after the 1929 stock market crash, when consumers needed new ways to buy more efficiently and save money. Since then, supermarkets have spread across the whole country and now exist in every format, from giant stores to more specialized chains.

Today I want to talk about the supermarkets and stores we actually use for our shopping. Unlike in France, where we had one favorite place, we often go to several stores in the United States depending on the products, prices, brands, and the atmosphere we are looking for.

Walmart

Walmart is one of the best-known retail giants in the United States, and for many newcomers it is one of the first stores they discover. You can find almost everything there: groceries, household products, clothes, toys, small appliances, seasonal decorations, and much more. Prices are often attractive, which makes it a practical store for everyday shopping.

That said, the shopping experience can vary a lot depending on the location. Some stores are very large and well stocked, while others feel more basic. Still, Walmart remains a useful place for one-stop shopping, especially when you are settling in and need many items at once.

Trader Joe’s

If I had to name one of the stores that feels the closest to what many Europeans like, Trader Joe’s would be high on the list. The atmosphere is friendly, the packaging is often appealing, and the selection includes many original products. We particularly appreciate the good value for money, the organic options, and the feeling that the store is more curated than a giant hypermarket.

The cheese section is interesting for people missing some European flavors, even if imported cheeses can be expensive. The wine selection is also quite good. In our favorites, we often find snacks, frozen products, sauces, prepared items, and seasonal discoveries. One thing to watch, however, is the ingredient list, because even products that look simple can sometimes contain added sugar.

Whole Foods

Whole Foods is a very popular option for people looking for organic products, special diets, and a more premium grocery environment. You will usually find a beautiful produce section, many natural or organic references, and a broad selection for people who care about ingredients and labels.

It is not the cheapest supermarket, but it can be very useful for quality products, specific dietary needs, and items that are harder to find elsewhere. If you are trying to understand organic labels in the United States, this type of store is also a good place to start.

Organic labels and what to look for

When you shop in the United States, labels matter. The term Organic and the USDA Organic label are useful references if you want products that follow the official organic certification standards. This can help when you are still getting used to American brands and do not yet know which products you trust.

Publix

In Florida, Publix is almost an institution. It is often cleaner, more pleasant, and more comfortable than some larger discount chains. The service is usually appreciated, and the stores tend to be well organized. Prices are not always the lowest, but for many people the shopping experience makes up for it.

Publix is especially practical for fresh products, bakery items, deli counters, and quick daily shopping. Many residents combine stores: Publix for convenience and selected fresh items, and other chains for bulk or lower prices.

Walgreens and CVS

IMG_0659

Walgreens and CVS are not supermarkets in the traditional sense but drugstores. Still, they are very important in daily American life. You can buy health and beauty products, pharmacy items, snacks, drinks, basic groceries, household products, and last-minute essentials. They are not the best places for a full grocery run, but they are extremely practical.

What feels different in American supermarkets

  • stores are often very large;
  • the product range is huge;
  • brands and private labels vary greatly from one chain to another;
  • bulk formats are common;
  • coupons and promotions play a very important role;
  • some chains are much more premium while others are purely practical.

Another important point is that shopping in the United States often means comparing several stores. One chain may be better for fresh produce, another for packaged products, another for organic items, and another for household goods or bulk purchases.

Our practical takeaway

There is no single “best” supermarket in the United States. It depends on your habits, your budget, your location, and the type of products you are looking for. In our case, we quickly understood that the smartest solution was to combine stores rather than expect one supermarket to do everything perfectly.

American supermarkets are part of the discovery when you live in or travel around the United States. Beyond the simple act of shopping, they reveal a lot about the country: consumer habits, food culture, convenience, abundance, and the incredible diversity of everyday life in America.
