Lovers Key State Park is on Florida’s southwest coast between Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach. It is part of Florida’s protected state park system and includes four barrier islands: Lovers Key, Inner Key, Black Island, and Long Key.

With its beautiful beaches and mangrove forests, Lovers Key is above all a refuge for many animals: sea turtles, manatees, alligators, dolphins, snakes, roseate spoonbills, and more.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, these barrier islands could only be reached by boat. The story says that only lovers came to this romantic island, which is where the name Lovers Key comes from. A road to the island was built later, in 1965.

At Lovers Key State Park, there are many outdoor activities: kayaking, canoeing, biking, fishing, and nature walks. The park has more than 11 kilometers of trails for walkers and cyclists. Bike, kayak, and paddleboard rentals, as well as guided excursions, are available through the park and partner operators in the area.

To enjoy the wildlife and plant life as much as possible, you can follow one of the two main trails: Black Island Trail (4 km) and Eagle Trail (1.8 km). Along the banks of the Black Island canal, you can watch kayakers enjoying Florida life.

As in most U.S. state parks, there are sheltered picnic areas throughout the park, with barbecue grills available for visitors. The park also offers guided tours and various events during the year, so it is worth checking the park website or asking a ranger once you are there.

Lovers Key is also known for its magnificent white-sand beach, about 3 kilometers long and scattered with shells. When you arrive at the park, you first come to a large parking lot. This is where you can rent bikes, kayaks, and other equipment. There is another parking area behind it that gives direct access to the Black Island Trail and Eagle Trail.

From there, you can walk to the south beach. If you are carrying a lot of things, or simply for the fun of it, you can also take the small tram included in the entrance price. It drops visitors directly at the beach and runs about every ten minutes.

Lovers Key State Park is also a popular place for weddings, and it is easy to understand why. The setting is idyllic, with water, mangroves, and one of the prettiest beaches in the region.
