If you want a little originality on your next Florida road trip, here is a selection of ten unusual restaurants in Florida. Some are known for their setting, others for their atmosphere, and some simply because the experience is not something you expect to find so easily in the Sunshine State.

1 – Buckingham Farms – Fort Myers

If you are looking for local food, this farm-to-table spot is a great choice. Breakfast is served from Wednesday to Saturday in the morning, lunch from Tuesday to Saturday, and on Friday evenings they offer a Southern-style dinner, very much in tune with U.S. meal times. 2 – The Old Spanish Sugar Mill – De Leon Springs

This unusual breakfast restaurant is located inside De Leon Springs State Park. Each table has its own griddle and you are given homemade pancake batter to cook yourself. You can order toppings such as bananas, pecans, chocolate, or apples, and they also serve eggs, ham, and homemade breads. It is one of the most fun breakfast experiences in Florida.

3 – Norwood’s Eatery & Treehouse Bar – New Smyrna Beach

Want to eat in a treehouse-style setting? This restaurant is known for its elevated bar area, its wine cellar, and its relaxed atmosphere. They also offer free wine tasting on Friday and Saturday evenings and live music every night. Website: http://www.norwoods.com/index.html

4 – Yoder’s Amish Restaurant – Sarasota

This restaurant serves hearty homemade food and is especially famous for its pies. The atmosphere is warm, simple, and family-friendly, which makes it a classic stop in Sarasota. Website: https://www.yodersrestaurant.com/

5 – Lone Cabbage Fish Camp – Cocoa

If you want to try gator, this is the place to order a basket of fried alligator in a truly unusual setting surrounded by marshland, before or after an airboat ride. It is a very simple restaurant, but people go there mainly for the atmosphere and the location. Website: http://twisterairboatrides.com/

6 – Bubble Room – Captiva Island

This restaurant is famous both for its food, especially its huge cakes, and for its delightfully eccentric atmosphere. We tried it during our trip to Sanibel and Captiva and loved it. Website: https://www.bubbleroomrestaurant.com/home

7 – Ice Plant – St. Augustine

At this restaurant, you can enjoy fresh products and cocktails served with distinctive ice cubes in the unusual setting of a former ice and distillery building. The atmosphere and décor are part of the experience. Website: http://iceplantbar.com/

8 – The Melting Pot

This chain is unusual less for the décor than for what is on the plate. Savory and sweet fondue are not very common in the United States, so it is a fun idea if you want something different while staying in Florida. There are several locations across the state. 9 – Columbia – Tampa

The original Columbia Restaurant is in Tampa’s historic Ybor City neighborhood, and it is a real institution. It has been run by the same family for generations, the décor is beautiful, and the Cuban influence is everywhere. Portions are generous. We tried the St. Augustine location and really enjoyed it. 10 – Dining at Cabbage Key – Pine Island

This historic restaurant is famous for the signed dollar bills covering the walls and ceilings. Outside, you have a lovely view of the marina. Cabbage Key is also a beautiful excursion in itself, which makes the meal part of a broader Florida experience.
