  >  Central Florida   >  Halloween in Disney and Universal Theme Parks in Orlando

If you’re visiting Orlando in the fall, experiencing Halloween at the theme parks is something you should not miss. Halloween season in Orlando has become a huge event, and both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando offer incredible—but very different—experiences.

From family-friendly trick-or-treating and magical parades to terrifying haunted houses and intense scare zones, Halloween in Orlando can be as cute or as scary as you want it to be.

The big question is: should you choose Disney or Universal?

The answer depends mainly on who you’re traveling with and the kind of experience you’re looking for.

At Walt Disney World Resort, Halloween is fun, festive, and designed for families. At Universal Orlando Resort, Halloween is darker, louder, and built for thrill seekers.

Here’s everything you need to know about Halloween at Disney and Universal Orlando.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Disney

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is Disney’s signature Halloween event, held at Magic Kingdom on select nights from August through Halloween.

As the name suggests, this is not a scary event. Even very young children can enjoy it.

This special-ticket event transforms Magic Kingdom into a Halloween wonderland filled with pumpkins, decorations, themed music, rare character meet-and-greets, and exclusive entertainment.

The atmosphere is magical rather than frightening.  Of course, you can also dress up and take part in the famous Trick-or-Treat throughout the park in specific areas (see the map below). You will also have access to Magic Kingdom attractions. More information can be found here about Halloween at Disney Orlando.

What can you do during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary?

One of the biggest highlights is the Mickey’s Boo-to-You Halloween Parade, one of Disney’s most beloved seasonal parades. You’ll see Disney characters in costumes, haunted mansion dancers, gravediggers, villains, and even the Headless Horseman riding through the park.

Another major highlight is Disney’s Halloween fireworks spectacular, featuring projections, special effects, and villain-themed sequences over Cinderella Castle.

Fans of Disney villains also love the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular, a live castle-stage show inspired by the cult Halloween movie Hocus Pocus.

Of course, one of the most fun activities for kids remains trick-or-treating. Candy stations are set up throughout the park, and guests receive treat bags to collect candy at multiple locations.

One of the things that makes this event extra fun is that costumes are allowed (within Disney guidelines), so you’ll see children and adults dressed as princesses, pirates, villains, and favorite Disney characters.

Is Disney Halloween worth it?

If you’re traveling with toddlers, young children, Disney fans, or families who dislike horror, this is usually the best Halloween event in Orlando.

It feels festive, charming, and uniquely Disney!

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando

If Disney is cute Halloween, Halloween Horror Nights is the exact opposite.

This is one of the most famous Halloween events in the United States and takes place at Universal Studios Florida.

During the event, the park becomes a full horror experience.

Fog fills the streets. Chainsaws roar in the distance. Actors dressed as monsters, killers, zombies, and creatures suddenly jump out to scare guests.

It feels like stepping into a horror movie.

What can you expect at Halloween Horror Nights?

The event usually includes:

  • multiple haunted houses based on horror franchises or original stories
  • scare zones throughout the park
  • live entertainment and shows
  • access to select rides and attractions

The haunted houses are the main attraction.

Universal is known for creating incredibly immersive horror environments with detailed sets, sound design, and professional scare actors.

Past themes have included franchises like:

  • Ghostbusters
  • Stranger Things
  • The Exorcist
  • A Quiet Place

Even original houses are often outstanding.

Is Universal Halloween too scary for kids?

For many children: yes.

Universal generally recommends the event for older kids, teens, and adults.

I would not recommend it for toddlers, sensitive children, or kids easily frightened by loud noises or jump scares.

This is a true horror event, not just spooky fun.

Also important: costumes and masks are not allowed for guests.

Disney vs Universal: Which Halloween Event Should You Choose?

Choose Disney if you want:

✔ family-friendly fun
✔ trick-or-treating
✔ parades and fireworks
✔ costumes
✔ no intense scares

Choose Universal if you want:

✔ haunted houses
✔ real scares
✔ horror movie vibes
✔ adrenaline
✔ intense Halloween atmosphere

Our Review

Halloween in Orlando offers two completely different experiences.

Disney delivers a magical, family-friendly Halloween filled with candy, costumes, and unforgettable entertainment.

Universal offers something much more intense—dark, immersive, and genuinely scary.

That’s why comparing them directly doesn’t really make sense.

If you have young kids, Disney is usually the obvious choice.

If you love horror movies and scary experiences, Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights is hard to beat.

Honestly, both are among the best seasonal events in Florida.

Final Thoughts

Whether you choose Disney or Universal, Halloween is one of the best times to visit Orlando.

The weather is usually more pleasant than in summer, the parks look amazing with seasonal decorations, and both resorts offer special limited-time entertainment.

For families, Disney wins. For thrill seekers, Universal wins. Either way, Halloween in Orlando is unforgettable.
