Everglades City is located on Florida’s west coast near the Ten Thousand Islands and about one hour from Naples. One of the three entrances to Everglades National Park is located here.

This small town, which seems untouched by time, has managed to keep all of its charm. It offers everything that can make Florida so special: lush nature, typical marsh and mangrove landscapes, and abundant wildlife.

People come to Everglades City to ride an airboat, kayak, visit the Ten Thousand Islands, or try to spot animals such as alligators, dolphins, raccoons, and manatees.

Many companies offering airboat rides are located at the entrance to Everglades City. They all provide different tours depending on the length of the ride, the places visited, and the activities included.

We chose Jungle Erv’s several times. They offer different airboat tours, including a short ride through the mangrove forest along the marshes and access to a protected area where you can often see alligators. Prices are around $42 for adults, $22 for children, and $8 for children under four, and there are often discount coupons on their website.

Their fleet includes small airboats, still with six seats, and that is what we chose each time. The first time we shared with another family, the second time we were only with friends, and on our third ride we had the airboat completely to ourselves. During that last visit, our driver treated us to several strong accelerations and a few fun 360-degree spins.

The ride through the mangrove forest is short but really enjoyable. Each time we were alone there, and it is a real pleasure to enjoy this environment peacefully without crowds. Years ago, during another Florida vacation, I had visited an alligator farm and taken a larger airboat tour that was also good, but it was much more crowded. Jungle Erv’s is smaller and simpler, and with children we found that much more enjoyable.

For lunch in Everglades City, you have several choices, often in very simple settings but with beautiful views. You can eat by the river and enjoy the surrounding nature, the mangroves, and the boats passing by.

Everglades City is one of those places that give you a very authentic view of Florida, far from the better-known seaside resort image. If you love wildlife, open landscapes, and a more natural side of the state, it is a great stop.

With its airboats, mangroves, wildlife, and authentic atmosphere, Everglades City is one of the most memorable gateways to wild Florida.
