Our first Christmas in the United States was a lovely discovery. Even in Florida, where the weather is far from a traditional snowy Christmas, the festive spirit is everywhere. Decorations, themed products, holiday traditions, and the general mood all create a very American version of Christmas that is joyful, colorful, and often a little over the top in the best possible way.

Ugly holiday sweaters

One of the amusing traditions that really marks the season is the famous ugly holiday sweater. These intentionally kitschy Christmas sweaters are part of the holiday atmosphere and perfectly illustrate the playful American approach to seasonal celebrations.

The Elf on the Shelf

Another very American tradition is The Elf on the Shelf. For many families, this little character becomes part of December routines and adds excitement for children. It is one of those customs that makes the holiday season feel very immersive.

Building a gingerbread house is another activity that immediately creates Christmas magic. It is festive, family-oriented, and very photogenic. Of course, with children around, decorations can mysteriously disappear before the house is finished… which also becomes part of the memory.

The holidays in Florida

Seeing Christmas decorations in Florida has its own charm. The contrast between palm trees, warm weather, and holiday lights can feel surprising to Europeans, but it is also what makes the experience so special. The festive mood is very real, even without cold weather.

Orlando at Christmas

Orlando and other Florida destinations become especially lively during the holidays, with events, shopping, decorations, and a very family-friendly atmosphere. If you ever have the opportunity to come to the United States during this season, it is a wonderful time to experience the country differently.

Final thoughts

Our first Christmas in the USA left us with warm memories. It was both familiar and different, festive and slightly surreal, and full of those little traditions that make you realize you are truly living another culture from the inside.

A season full of small rituals

What we loved most was probably the accumulation of small rituals: seasonal decorations, themed treats, family activities, and all those little moments that make December feel different. Even if the climate is not the same as in Europe, the festive spirit is incredibly strong.

Christmas the American way

In the United States, Christmas often feels more visual, more playful, and more present in everyday life than many foreigners expect. That creates a very warm atmosphere, especially when you are discovering it for the first time as a family.
