Whether you’re planning a family outing, a day with friends, or simply looking to enjoy nature, these parks offer an unforgettable experience. I especially recommend arriving early in the morning during high-season weekends, as these spots are extremely popular and attract large numbers of visitors. In fact, Honeymoon Island welcomes more than one million visitors every year, making it the most visited state park in all of Florida!

To give you a little historical background, before the 1921 hurricane, Honeymoon Island and neighboring Caladesi Island were actually one large island known as Hog Island. But the hurricane completely reshaped the area, splitting the island in two and creating what is now known as Hurricane Pass. Today, these two parks are natural sanctuaries where history blends with wild, preserved beauty.

See hotels near Honeymoon Island

Honeymoon Island State Park

A Little History

In the late 1930s, a businessman named Clinton Washburn purchased the island. During a conversation with a friend who was an editor for Life magazine, he mentioned that the island would be the perfect honeymoon destination. Inspired by the idea, the editor published an article that quickly made Honeymoon Island famous. At the time, fifty cottages dedicated to honeymoon stays were built, and on May 8, 1940, the first newlyweds arrived on the island. In total, 164 couples took part in this unique experience. Unfortunately, the dream did not last long. At the beginning of World War II, the island was leased to an Ohio businessman, who turned it into a retreat for his employees.

The Park in Florida’s Hands

In 1974, the State of Florida acquired the first portion of the island. Over the following six years, the remaining parcels were gradually purchased. On December 7, 1981, Honeymoon Island State Park officially opened to visitors, offering a gateway to Florida’s natural beauty.

Honeymoon Island, Florida

Things You Shouldn’t Miss

The park is massive and offers plenty of activities for all ages. Of course, the beach is the main attraction. With more than 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) of beautiful sandy beaches, there’s plenty of room to relax, swim, surf, fish, or simply enjoy the Florida sunshine. Honeymoon Island also features a dedicated dog beach area, which is fairly rare in Florida and makes it a popular spot for pet owners. On-site, you can rent kayaks, beach umbrellas, and beach chairs.

Wildlife lovers will also enjoy the park, as it’s common to spot dolphins, osprey, tortoises, and many native Florida birds throughout the island.

Exploring and Walking Trails

If you prefer exploring beyond the beach, the park has several great options. You can bike around the island or rent family surrey bikes, perfect for a fun ride with kids. Hiking is another popular activity, especially on the Osprey Trail, which stretches for just over 2 miles through one of the last remaining virgin slash pine forests in Florida.

Like many Florida State Parks, Honeymoon Island also offers picnic areas equipped with barbecue grills, making it a great place to spend the entire day outdoors.

You can also take the ferry from Honeymoon Island to nearby Caladesi Island State Park, one of the most beautiful, untouched islands on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Practical Information

For visitors wanting to learn more about the area, the Nature Center features exhibits about the history, wildlife, and ecosystems of Honeymoon and Caladesi Islands.

Address: #1 Causeway Blvd, Dunedin, FL 34698
Hours: Open daily from 8 a.m. until sunset
Admission:

$8 per vehicle (2 to 8 passengers)

$4 for a single-occupant vehicle

$2 for pedestrians or cyclists

Book a hotel near Honeymoon Island.

Caladesi Island

A Preserved Natural Island

Caladesi Island is one of the few completely natural islands remaining along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Unlike many other destinations, the island is only accessible by water. You can reach it by private boat, jet ski, paddleboard, or kayak. If you don’t have your own transportation, a ferry departs daily from Honeymoon Island and takes visitors across St. Joseph Sound in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Ferry departures usually run every half hour starting around 10 a.m., except on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Keep in mind that ferry tickets generally allow a limited stay of about 4 hours on the island. If you’d like to extend your day in the area, you can always return to Honeymoon Island afterward to continue enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

Wild Beaches and Relaxation

If you love swimming, soft white sand, and sunshine, you’ll absolutely enjoy Caladesi Island’s 3 miles (5 kilometers) of unspoiled beaches. The island has repeatedly been ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the United States. Just like at Honeymoon Island, you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas directly on-site. For visitors who enjoy water activities, kayaks and canoes are also available to rent, allowing you to explore the island’s crystal-clear waters and mangrove tunnels.

A Fascinating History

While exploring the island, you can visit the historic Scharrer Homestead site. This area highlights the island’s rich wildlife and natural environment. Caladesi Island also has a fascinating history. It is believed that the Tocobaga Native American tribe once used the island as a burial ground. In 1513, European explorers arrived in the region, dramatically changing life for the native population. Later, around the late 1800s, a Swiss immigrant settled on the island and built a homestead there. His daughter, Myrtle Scharrer, later shared memories of her childhood in a book called Yesteryear I Lived in Paradise, which can often be found at the Caladesi Café gift shop.

Relaxation and Dining

The island also features a small snack bar and gift shop called the Caladesi Café. Keep in mind that prices can be a bit high (for example, a burger costs around $10 without fries). If you prefer, you can bring your own picnic. Several picnic shelters with barbecue grills are available, making it a perfect spot for an outdoor lunch surrounded by nature.

Practical Information

Access: Boat access only, mainly via Honeymoon Island
Hours: Open daily from 8 a.m. until sunset
Ferry Rates:

$16 per adult

$8 per child

Free for children under 5

The ferry fee includes the state park entrance fee. The ferry drops visitors off near the café, about a 10-minute walk from the beach.

My Tip

If possible, I highly recommend visiting Caladesi Island during the week. You’ll have a much better chance of enjoying the island in a peaceful, almost untouched atmosphere. On weekends, locals love coming here to relax — and honestly, it’s easy to understand why!

FAQ – Honeymoon Island & Caladesi Island

Is Honeymoon Island worth visiting?

Absolutely. Honeymoon Island is one of the most beautiful and accessible state parks on Florida’s Gulf Coast, with gorgeous beaches, nature trails, wildlife, and stunning sunsets.

Can you visit Caladesi Island without a boat?

No, Caladesi Island is only accessible by water. Most visitors take the ferry from Honeymoon Island, but you can also arrive by private boat, kayak, or paddleboard.

How long should you plan for your visit?

If you only visit Honeymoon Island, half a day is usually enough. If you plan to visit both Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island, it’s best to dedicate a full day.

Which island is better: Honeymoon Island or Caladesi Island?

It depends on what you’re looking for. Honeymoon Island is easier to access and offers more amenities, while Caladesi Island feels more secluded, natural, and peaceful.

Can you see dolphins at Honeymoon Island or Caladesi Island?

Yes! Dolphins are commonly spotted along the shore, especially early in the morning or near sunset. You may also see osprey, pelicans, tortoises, rays, and other Florida wildlife.

Are dogs allowed?

Dogs are allowed at Honeymoon Island in the designated dog beach area and on certain trails. Pets are not allowed on the ferry to Caladesi Island or on Caladesi’s beaches.

Is there food available on the islands?

Yes. Honeymoon Island has a small café and snack area, and Caladesi Island features the Caladesi Café near the ferry dock. However, many visitors prefer bringing their own picnic.

What is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit is usually between November and April, when temperatures are more comfortable, and humidity is lower. Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends.

Conclusion

Between untouched beaches, crystal-clear Gulf waters, scenic nature trails, and incredible wildlife, Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island offer a peaceful and beautifully preserved side of Florida that many visitors never get to experience. Whether you’re planning a relaxing beach day, a family adventure, or simply looking to reconnect with nature, these two islands are absolutely worth adding to your Florida bucket list.

From the easy access and family-friendly atmosphere of Honeymoon Island to the wild, secluded beauty of Caladesi Island, each destination offers its own unique charm along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Together, they create the perfect escape from the busy theme parks and crowded tourist areas, while still showcasing some of the most breathtaking scenery in the Sunshine State.

If you enjoy discovering hidden gems, pristine beaches, and authentic Florida landscapes, I also recommend exploring some of the state’s other beautiful islands, including Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, and the Marco Island area.
