And yet these small islands are well worth a stop because they hide a few well-kept Florida secrets. We visited them during a Florida road trip in 2018, and I invite you to discover them in this article.

To reach these islands from Jacksonville via Highway A1A, you can take the St. Johns River Ferry in Mayport, which crosses the river in just a few minutes. It will take you directly to Fort George Island. Because the islands are small, they follow one another naturally and include a few atypical and not very touristy places to visit.

General information: Address: 4610 Ocean St, Atlantic Beach, FL 32233. Prices: $6/car, $1/cyclist, and $5/two-wheel vehicle. The ferry runs all year long and crosses morning to evening every 30 minutes. More information about schedules is available on the St. Johns River Ferry website.

Fort George Island

On this island, you can discover part of Florida’s history through Kingsley Plantation and Fort George Island Cultural State Park. You can also enjoy the beach at Huguenot Memorial Park (entrance: $5/vehicle).

Kingsley Plantation

After crossing a subtropical forest for a few miles, you arrive at this former plantation of cotton, sugar cane, citrus fruits, and corn. The visit immerses you in the history of the Kingsley family and especially in the history of slavery. During the plantation period in Florida between 1763 and 1865, Fort George Island belonged to several planters. In 1814, Zephaniah Kingsley settled on Fort George Island with his family. His wife, Anna Madgigine Jai, originally from Senegal, had been bought by Kingsley as a slave. She played an active role in managing the plantations, acquiring her own land and slaves after being freed by Kingsley in 1811. Because of racial laws, Zephaniah Kingsley sent his family to Haiti in 1837 to protect them. He died without seeing them again in the United States in 1843. His wife Jai returned to Florida to witness the emancipation proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln.

Through this family history, you discover a very important dimension of Florida’s past. It is a visit that gives real depth to the trip because it connects landscapes, architecture, and historical memory.

What makes these islands especially interesting is precisely that contrast between natural beauty and historical significance. They are not only pleasant coastal stops, but also places that allow you to understand a less touristy and more layered side of Florida.

For a road trip through Northeast Florida, Talbot Islands and Fort George Island are therefore excellent stops for people who like quieter places, natural beauty, and a little local history away from the most famous postcard destinations.

Talbot Islands and Fort George Island are among those preserved and lesser-known Florida stops that leave a lasting impression precisely because they feel so different.

Why these islands are worth the detour

What makes this area special is precisely the feeling of discovering a Florida that is both coastal and discreet. These are not the most famous stops in the state, which is also why they feel so rewarding when you take the time to visit them. There is a sense of calm and preservation that contrasts strongly with more tourist-heavy parts of Florida.

The ferry crossing itself already contributes to that impression. It turns the visit into a small transition and gives the outing a more local, slower rhythm. From that point on, the islands feel less like a quick roadside stop and more like a real little journey.

Nature and history together

Another strength of Talbot Islands and Fort George Island is that they combine nature and history in a very natural way. You can enjoy landscapes, beaches, forests, and quiet roads, while also encountering important historical sites such as Kingsley Plantation. That combination gives more depth to the stop than a simple beach outing.

For travelers who like places with atmosphere, local texture, and a more preserved side of Florida, this area is clearly worth remembering. It is one of those road trip discoveries that feel more authentic precisely because they remain less obvious than the state’s major tourist icons.

<p style="text-align:
