Indeed, when people come on vacation and enjoy eating, one of the classic activities is of course tasting all those rich and sugary “Made in USA” products, often associated with GMOs, or “GMO” in the American version. People also test all kinds of fast food, and generally make a stop in the most extreme aisles of the most iconic US store of all, Walmart. We have almost all done it. On the other hand, when you actually live in the United States, you begin to see things very differently, because it is no longer just 10 or 15 days of junk food during a vacation, but everyday life.

Walmart

Today, it is impossible not to know that food and health are closely linked, not to mention the environment. Even though America has experienced for several years a growing wave of organic products, called USDA here, and newer categories of specific foods such as Gluten Free, there is still a huge amount of sorting to do. We should not hide from reality: food and health are complicated issues to manage in this country when you are an expatriate used to other standards.

Even before our expatriation, I was already paying close attention to what we were eating in France. But our arrival in 2016 in the USA intensified that lifestyle of constantly deciphering labels in supermarkets. At first, we were a bit lost in supermarket aisles in the USA, so we tried to understand the labels and certifications in order to eat as healthily as possible in this industrial era. It is also a topic I discuss in my second book Expatriation to the USA, the Day After. For weeks, and even months, we tested several supermarkets and different American food products, then learned how to decipher the labels. In your native language, it is already difficult to sort through all these certifications, so imagine doing it in another language, with organizations and acronyms you had never even heard of before. We had to learn, and with time we developed habits before buying food.

Our experience in supermarkets

Walmart: The unavoidable American supermarket, very interesting on price. We buy the basics there like paper towels, tissues, and a few organic products marked USDA. We also buy many other types of products there, from computer items to kitchen utensils.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1893506235286042" data-ad-format="auto" data-ad-slot="7722373008" data-full-width-responsive="true" style="display: block;"></ins>

Costco: This bulk retailer can be interesting for large families. We tested it for a year but eventually stopped because, even if some things are worth buying in bulk, the cart ends up full and the final bill quite high. So you need to stay reasonable at Costco. And honestly, shopping in four different places amused me a little at the beginning, but not anymore.

Whole Foods: You find many items there, from food, including some European products, to household goods. Despite being bought by Amazon, prices still remain a little high and some items are simply overpriced. We go there from time to time for a few specific products and also sometimes to have lunch.

Why food in the USA can feel so different

What often surprises expatriates is not only the content of products, but also the shopping culture itself: the size of the stores, the abundance of processed foods, the omnipresence of marketing, and the coexistence of healthier options with extremely industrial products. The choice is huge, but that does not always make things simpler.

Food in the USA is therefore not just a subject about taste. It is also a subject about habits, labels, health, budget, and adaptation. Over time, you learn where to shop, what to read on packaging, and which products are worth buying or avoiding. But at the beginning, it can definitely feel overwhelming.

Understanding food in the USA also means understanding a very concrete part of American daily life, consumption, and adaptation as an expatriate.

Learning to read labels and choose differently

One of the biggest changes when living in the USA is that you start reading labels much more carefully. At first, it can feel exhausting. Ingredients, certifications, sugar levels, additives, organic labels, and product categories are not always easy to understand, especially in another language. But over time, that becomes part of the routine.

You also learn that all American food should not be reduced to junk food. There are healthier options, organic products, better supermarkets, and specific stores where the quality is much more satisfying. The difficulty is that the sorting work falls on the consumer much more visibly.

A daily expatriate issue

That is why food in the USA becomes such a central topic for expatriates. It is not only about pleasure or curiosity. It is about health, family habits, shopping strategies, and learning to adapt without giving up all your standards. The first months can be confusing, but gradually you develop reflexes, favorite stores, and more confidence in what you buy.

In the end, food becomes one of the clearest examples of how expatriation changes everyday life. It is a practical subject, but also a cultural one, because it reveals how different a country can feel through its supermarkets and eating habits alone.

Food in the USA is not just about what ends up on the plate: it is one of the most concrete parts of adaptation to everyday American life.

Between curiosity and vigilance

That is also what makes food in the USA such an interesting subject: it is a mix of curiosity and vigilance. On the one hand, there are countless things to discover, tastes to test, stores to explore, and products that feel very American. On the other hand, when you live there, you quickly understand that you have to stay attentive if you want to keep a balanced daily routine.

That tension between pleasure, convenience, abundance, and quality is something many expatriates notice very quickly. It changes the way you shop and often makes you more aware of labels, ingredients, and food habits than before.

A subject that goes beyond the supermarket

Food in the USA is therefore not only a supermarket issue. It is also a cultural subject that says a lot about the country: its consumer habits, its relationship to health, its enormous choice, and its industrial logic, but also the growing place of organic products and alternative food options.

With time, you learn to navigate all of this better. You find the stores and products that suit you, and you build your own balance between discovery and caution. That is often how expatriate life works: first surprise, then adaptation, then new habits.

Food in the USA is one of the clearest examples of how everyday expatriation mixes discovery, adjustment, and new routines.

Whether you are a tourist or an expatriate, food in the USA is a huge topic.
