But Miami is so much more than that.

Over the years, I’ve realized that a lot of visitors come to Miami without really knowing where to go or how the city is laid out.

First, it’s important to know that Miami — often nicknamed the Magic City — is the largest city in Florida and is made up of several distinct areas, including Downtown Miami, Midtown, South Miami, North Miami, and, of course, the famous Miami Beach.

The best things to do in Miami aren’t limited to just one neighborhood. Instead, every part of the city offers something different depending on your interests, travel style, and the kind of atmosphere you’re looking for. As you’ll quickly discover, the vibe and scenery can change completely from one neighborhood to another — and that contrast is part of what makes Miami so unique.

In this guide, you’ll find some ideas for places to explore and experiences to enjoy (outside of museums) during your next trip to Miami.

South Beach, also known as SoBe.

South Beach, often nicknamed SoBe, is one of Miami’s must-see areas and is located on Miami Beach, the large barrier island facing the city. One of the most iconic ways to get there is by driving across the MacArthur Causeway.

South Beach is the version of Miami most people picture when they think about the city — and sometimes even Florida as a whole. It’s famous for its vibrant atmosphere, nightlife, trendy restaurants, and energetic beach scene. SoBe is also one of the top spots in Miami for nightlife, with countless clubs, cocktail bars, and stylish lounges. The neighborhood is packed with hotels, from boutique properties to iconic luxury resorts.

South Beach is especially known for its Art Deco District, filled with colorful restored buildings and the legendary Ocean Drive, lined with restaurants, cafés, and bars just steps from the beach. Another well-known street, Collins Avenue, is famous for its many Art Deco-style hotels and upscale resorts.

Fair warning: these areas are extremely touristy, but they’re iconic for a reason.

I also recommend taking a walk through Lummus Park, which runs along Miami Beach and is known for its palm trees, beach vibes, and colorful lifeguard towers. If you’re looking for a quieter atmosphere, head down to South Pointe Park, a beautiful waterfront area with walking paths, splash zones for kids, and great views of the ocean and cruise ships passing by.

Still on Miami Beach, Lincoln Road is a large pedestrian-friendly street located just a few blocks from the beach. It’s known for its many fashion boutiques, outdoor cafés, and trendy restaurants, making it a popular spot to shop, stroll, or grab a drink.

As you walk along the avenue, you’ll also notice several beautiful Art Deco-style buildings, including the iconic Colony Theatre, which adds even more charm to the area.

Address: Lincoln Rd, Miami Beach, FL 33139

South Pointe Park

As its name suggests, South Pointe Park is located at the southern tip of Miami Beach. This beautiful waterfront park offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Miami skyline, and the cruise ships entering and leaving the port.

Compared to the busy atmosphere of South Beach, South Pointe Park feels much more peaceful and relaxing. It’s a great place for a walk, a bike ride, or simply to sit and enjoy the ocean views. The park also features walking paths, green spaces, a small beach access area, and a splash zone for children.

Address: 1 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139

Miami Beach Botanical Garden

The Miami Beach Botanical Garden is one of the city’s hidden gems and a peaceful escape in the middle of Miami Beach.
