We’ve been visiting since 2016, and every time we go, it feels like a real little getaway without having to travel far.

With its wild beaches, mangrove forests, scenic nature trails, and incredible wildlife, there’s plenty to enjoy in one place. You can relax on the beach, walk the trails, kayak through the mangroves, look for dolphins and manatees, or stay to watch a breathtaking sunset over the Gulf.

Once considered a hidden gem mostly known by locals, Lovers Key has become a must-visit destination for travelers who want to experience a quieter, more natural side of Florida. Whether you visit for a few hours or spend the entire day exploring, Lovers Key State Park absolutely deserves a spot on your Florida itinerary.

Where Is Lovers Key State Park?

Lovers Key State Park is located just south of Fort Myers Beach and north of Bonita Springs. The park covers more than 1,600 acres and is made up of four barrier islands: Lovers Key, Inner Key, Black Island, and Long Key.

Years ago, these islands could only be reached by boat. According to local legend, couples would come here to enjoy the remote beaches and spend time alone, which is how Lovers Key got its romantic name.

Southwest Florida has experienced tremendous growth and development in recent years, but Lovers Key still feels peaceful, wild, and beautifully preserved. It remains one of those special places where you can escape the busy roads, condos, and new construction and experience the natural side of Florida.

Access from Fort Myers Beach has also changed with the opening of the new Big Carlos Pass Bridge, which connects the southern end of Estero Island to Lovers Key. The old drawbridge was replaced by a much taller fixed bridge with bike lanes and pedestrian paths. The new bridge is already open to traffic, although the final construction work is expected to continue through summer 2026

With its beautiful beaches and mangrove forests, Lovers Key is also an important refuge for wildlife, including sea turtles, manatees, alligators, dolphins, snakes, and roseate spoonbills. We’ve seen many different birds during our visits, making Lovers Key a wonderful destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Why Visit Lovers Key State Park?

Lovers Key is especially known for its beautiful stretches of white sand, calm Gulf waters, mangrove forests, scenic nature trails, kayaking and paddleboarding opportunities, and abundant wildlife. Its beaches are truly beautiful and still feel wonderfully natural. It’s also a great alternative for travelers who want to enjoy the beaches of Southwest Florida in a quieter setting than some of the busier areas of Fort Myers Beach.

The Beaches at Lovers Key

The beach at Lovers Key stretches for about 2.5 miles and is one of the things we love most about the park. It feels much more natural and unspoiled than many other beaches in Florida, with soft sand, plenty of seashells, shorebirds along the water, and beautiful views of the Gulf. You may even spot dolphins swimming offshore, especially if the water is calm.

We particularly enjoy staying until sunset, when the beach becomes even more peaceful, and the sky changes color over the Gulf. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, although the park’s romantic setting has also made it a popular place for beach weddings over the years. Weddings are still allowed today, but couples need to contact the park directly to arrange the ceremony and confirm the current requirements.

South Beach

South Beach is the section we usually choose when we visit Lovers Key. Reaching it now requires a walk of approximately half a mile from Parking Lot #1, as the park tram has been permanently discontinued. Visitors looking for the shortest route to the beach can instead use the Mid-Beach access, which is about 1,000 feet from the parking lot.

The walk is part of the experience, with wooden boardwalks and lovely views of the mangroves and surrounding waterways along the way. Just remember to bring everything you need, especially if you’re visiting with children.

North Beach

The northern end of the beach feels wilder and can be quieter, particularly if you’re willing to walk farther from the main access areas. We love this part of Lovers Key because it really gives you that feeling of being surrounded by nature, away from Florida’s more developed beaches.

Sea turtles also nest along the shores of Lovers Key. Florida’s main sea turtle nesting season runs from May through October, not only from May to July. Marked nests and protected areas should never be approached or disturbed. Visitors should also avoid leaving trash behind, filling in holes in the sand, or using bright lights near the beach after dark.

Kayaking Through the Mangroves

Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore Lovers Key and experience a completely different side of the park. Once you leave the beach behind and begin paddling through the mangroves, the surroundings become incredibly peaceful. The narrow waterways, quiet lagoons, and mangrove-lined passages create a landscape that feels unmistakably Floridian.

The park has a 2.5-mile paddling route through a protected mangrove estuary. Along the way, you may see ospreys, bald eagles, dolphins, and even manatees swimming in the calmer waterways. Of course, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but that is part of what makes each trip feel like a real little adventure.

Visitors should know that, according to the park’s current detailed information, kayak and paddleboard rentals are not available inside Lovers Key at this time. You can still bring your own equipment and use the accessible kayak launch. The park also now asks cyclists to bring their own bicycles. Some local companies may offer rentals or guided eco-tours nearby, but it is best to confirm availability directly before your visit because services have changed several times since Hurricane Ian.

Hiking and Nature Trails

Lovers Key State Park has more than seven miles of trails that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. We’ve walked the trails ourselves and found them easy and enjoyable, so you don’t need to be an experienced hiker to explore this part of the park.

The 2.5-mile Black Island Trail follows the canals and passes through a maritime hammock, offering plenty of opportunities to look for birds and other wildlife. The shorter Eagle Trail is about 1.1 miles long and is a good option if you only want to take a quick nature walk along the park’s inner waterways.

We definitely recommend exploring these trails when temperatures are comfortable, particularly during the winter or early spring. They are much less enjoyable in the middle of a hot and humid Southwest Florida summer. If you visit during a warmer period, go early in the morning, carry plenty of water, use insect repellent, and never underestimate the Florida heat.

Picnic Areas and Amenities

Lovers Key is a lovely place to spend an entire day outdoors with the family. There are picnic areas and pavilions where you can take a break in the shade and enjoy your own lunch surrounded by nature. We recommend bringing a cooler with food, snacks, and plenty of water, especially if you plan to combine the beach with the trails or kayaking.

Restrooms are available near Parking Lot #1, the Welcome and Discovery Center, the boat ramp, and the bayside area. The park also has outdoor shower stations where you can rinse off after the beach, as well as water fountains with bottle-filling stations.

However, you should not currently expect to find a snack bar or rental facilities. As of July 2026, the park is still selecting a new concessionaire, so food and drinks are not sold inside the park, and rentals of kayaks, paddleboards, bicycles, beach chairs, and umbrellas are unavailable. It is therefore important to bring everything you will need for the day.

Weddings and Sunsets

Lovers Key has long been one of the most popular places for beach weddings in Southwest Florida. The beach remains beautifully natural, with no large hotels or condominiums directly behind it, creating a more secluded and romantic setting than many other public beaches in the area. Sunsets over the Gulf can be spectacular, with the sky often turning orange, pink, and purple as the sun disappears over the water.

Weddings are still permitted at Lovers Key, but couples cannot simply arrive and set up a ceremony on the beach. The first step is to contact the park directly at 239-707-6328 to check whether the preferred date and location are available. Park staff will explain the current reservation process, any required special-use permit, applicable fees, and the rules regarding the number of guests, chairs, decorations, photography, and outside vendors. These details aren’t published clearly online yet, so please confirm arrangements directly with the park.

Couples should also remember that Lovers Key remains a public state park. Unless a specific area has been officially reserved, other visitors may still be nearby, and a beach ceremony will always depend on the weather, tides, and natural conditions. The park closes at sundown, so the ceremony and photographs must be planned around its operating hours. Guests will also need to consider the walk from the parking lot, as the tram has been permanently discontinued.

The park provides the location, but couples generally need to arrange their own officiant, photographer, flowers, chairs, and other wedding services. A Florida marriage license must also be obtained separately; reserving a ceremony at Lovers Key does not include the legal marriage paperwork.

Even if you are not attending a wedding, sunset is one of our favorite times to visit. The peaceful beach and open Gulf views make it a beautiful place to end a day at the park and an especially photogenic setting for couples and families.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

We always recommend arriving early, especially on weekends and during the winter season. The parking lot is fairly large, but it can still fill up when the park is busy. An early arrival also gives you more time to enjoy the beach before the hottest part of the day.

Florida’s heat should not be underestimated. From May through October, the combination of high temperatures and humidity can make the trails and the walk to the beach uncomfortable. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and something to protect yourself from the sun. Since the park currently has no food, drink, or beach equipment rentals, you’ll need to bring everything with you.

Summer weather can also change very quickly. A sunny afternoon can turn into a thunderstorm within minutes, so check the forecast before leaving and keep an eye on the sky while you are there.

Finally, remember that Lovers Key is first and foremost a protected natural area. Stay on the designated trails, never approach wildlife, and respect all marked nesting areas for sea turtles and shorebirds. Leave shells with living animals where you find them, fill in holes dug in the sand, and take everything you brought into the park back out with you.

Practical Information for Your Visit

Lovers Key State Park is located at 8700 Estero Boulevard, Bonita Springs, FL 33931, between Bonita Springs and the southern end of Fort Myers Beach.
