Visitors can explore the settlement\u2019s restored historic buildings and landscaped grounds, then discover the park\u2019s more natural side along the Estero River. The park also offers nature trails, picnic areas, fishing, paddling and boating.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/tpwidg.com\/content?currency=usd&#038;trs=528564&#038;shmarker=728147&#038;powered_by=true&#038;locale=en&#038;destination=5196&#038;lowest_price=&#038;highest_price=&#038;min_lines=5&#038;color_button=%23f2685f&#038;promo_id=5850&#038;campaign_id=47\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>Admission is currently <strong>$5 per vehicle for two to eight people<\/strong>, <strong>$4 for a single-occupant vehicle<\/strong>, and <strong>$2 for pedestrians, bicyclists and additional passengers<\/strong>. They have become increasingly popular across the United States.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"214\" data-end=\"465\">One important update: the former Koreshan farmers market is <strong data-start=\"274\" data-end=\"319\">no longer held inside Koreshan State Park<\/strong>. It moved in 2023 and is now known as the <strong data-start=\"362\" data-end=\"399\">Friends of Koreshan Sunday Market<\/strong>, located at <strong data-start=\"412\" data-end=\"464\">Three Oaks Town Center, 18731 Three Oaks Parkway<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"467\" data-end=\"905\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The market is open every Sunday from <strong data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"524\">8 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/strong> The number of vendors may vary depending on the season, especially during Florida\u2019s hot and humid summer months. Surrounded by tropical vegetation, bamboo and enormous old trees, the historic district preserves <strong data-start=\"226\" data-end=\"251\">11 original buildings<\/strong> once used by the Koreshan Unity. You can explore the grounds at your own pace and discover former homes, the Art Hall, the Planetary Court, the bakery, the machine shop and other structures that formed the heart of this unusual community.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"492\" data-end=\"892\">The Koreshan Unity was a religious and utopian community founded by <strong data-start=\"560\" data-end=\"583\">Dr. Cyrus Reed Teed<\/strong>, who later adopted the name \u201cKoresh.\u201d The group arrived in Estero in the 1890s with the ambitious goal of creating a \u201cNew Jerusalem\u201d based on communal living, shared labor and Teed\u2019s religious and scientific teachings. At its height during the early 1900s, the settlement was home to more than 200 residents.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2019\" data-end=\"2307\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_8903.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5622\" src=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_8903-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Koreshan State Historic Site\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_9017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5607\" src=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_9017-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Koreshan State Historic Site\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"894\" data-end=\"1194\">One of their most surprising beliefs was that humanity lived <strong data-start=\"955\" data-end=\"1008\">inside the Earth rather than on its outer surface<\/strong>. They believed the Earth was a hollow sphere containing the entire universe and even conducted experiments using a device known as the Rectilineator in an attempt to prove their theory.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1196\" data-end=\"1711\">Despite their unconventional beliefs, the Koreshans created a remarkably organized and advanced settlement. They operated a school, bakery, general store, sawmill, printing house, machine shop and power plant. They produced their own electricity, published newspapers and books, organized concerts and plays, and cultivated the surrounding land. However, it would be inaccurate to say that they lived in complete isolation: the community also operated businesses and traded goods with people outside the settlement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1713\" data-end=\"2017\">Following Cyrus Teed\u2019s death in 1908, membership gradually declined. In 1961, the last four remaining members donated <strong data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"1844\">305 acres<\/strong> to the State of Florida, allowing the property to be preserved as a historic site. The last Koreshan member, Hedwig Michel, continued to live there until her death in 1982.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2019\" data-end=\"2307\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Guided historic tours are offered during part of the year, although regularly scheduled tours are paused during the summer months. easy walk in nature. The trails are relatively short and mostly flat, making them suitable for families and visitors who do not want a difficult hike.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"222\" data-end=\"542\">The <strong data-start=\"226\" data-end=\"241\">River Trail<\/strong> begins near the historic settlement and follows the Estero River. Along the way, it passes through an impressive bamboo forest before continuing beneath oaks, cabbage palms and pine trees. The shaded sections are especially pleasant, although the trail can still feel hot and humid during the summer.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"801\">You can also wander through the historic gardens, where the Koreshans planted many exotic species from around the world. The combination of unusual tropical plants, old buildings and quiet pathways gives this part of the park a truly distinctive atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"1081\">Keep an eye out for gopher tortoises, butterflies, birds and, occasionally, river otters or alligators near the water. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, of course. The paths may include sand, grass, roots and uneven ground, so comfortable closed-toe shoes are preferable.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1083\" data-end=\"1372\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">During Florida\u2019s warmer months, bring water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Exploring the river by kayak or canoe offers a completely different view of the park and is one of the best ways to experience its natural side.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"333\" data-end=\"614\">Visitors can launch their own kayak or canoe from the park. The river is generally calm near the launch, making this section accessible to recreational paddlers. However, it is a <strong data-start=\"512\" data-end=\"540\">tidal, brackish waterway<\/strong>, so currents and water levels can vary with the tide and recent rainfall.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"616\" data-end=\"863\">The Estero River flows west toward <strong data-start=\"651\" data-end=\"706\">Estero Bay, approximately three miles from the park<\/strong>. Paddlers may see turtles, fish, wading birds and, occasionally, manatees, river otters or alligators. Wildlife sightings are possible but never guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"1180\">A boat ramp is also available for vessels up to 24 feet. Feeding alligators is both dangerous and illegal in Florida because it causes them to associate people with food.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"926\" data-end=\"1245\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The park is also home to many birds, butterflies, river otters and other native animals. Bobcats and gray foxes live in the surrounding natural areas, although visitors are unlikely to see them during the day.
