Every time we cross the causeway, it feels like a real escape, even though the islands are so close to home.<\/p><p data-start=\"244\" data-end=\"668\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">We love their shell-covered beaches, tropical scenery, bike paths, wildlife, colorful cottages, and relaxed atmosphere. After visiting many times over the years, we still enjoy coming back, especially during the quieter months, when the islands feel even more peaceful and authentic. Sanibel and Captiva offer a completely different side of Florida from Miami or Orlando and that is exactly what makes them so special to us.<\/p><h2 data-section-id=\"pf41xd\" data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"886\">Where Are Sanibel and Captiva Islands?<\/h2><p data-start=\"888\" data-end=\"1131\">Sanibel and Captiva are barrier islands located near Fort Myers and Cape Coral on Florida\u2019s Gulf Coast. The islands are connected to the mainland by the famous Sanibel Causeway, a scenic bridge crossing turquoise water and small sandy islands.<\/p><p data-start=\"888\" data-end=\"1131\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/tpwidg.com\/content?trs=528564&#038;shmarker=728147&#038;locale=en_us&#038;sustainable=false&#038;deals=false&#038;border_radius=5&#038;plain=true&#038;powered_by=true&#038;promo_id=2693&#038;campaign_id=84\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><p data-start=\"1133\" data-end=\"1278\">From Fort Myers Beach, the drive usually takes around 35 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic. From Naples, expect about 1 hour and 30 minutes.<\/p><p data-start=\"1280\" data-end=\"1441\">Even the drive onto the islands is part of the experience. Most payments are now handled electronically through SunPass or Toll-by-Plate. Because of the island\u2019s unusual east-west orientation, ocean currents carry thousands of shells onto its beaches every day. You\u2019ll often see people walking with their heads down, searching the sand\u2014a posture locals jokingly call the \u201cSanibel Stoop.\u201d<\/p><p data-start=\"1856\" data-end=\"2076\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/tpwidg.com\/content?trs=528564&#038;shmarker=728147&#038;locale=en_us&#038;powered_by=true&#038;primary_override=%235392F9&#038;color_button=%235392F9&#038;color_icons=%235392F9&#038;dark=%23262626&#038;color_border=%235392F9&#038;color_focused=%2332a8dd&#038;border_radius=5&#038;plain=false&#038;promo_id=8303&#038;campaign_id=104\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><p data-start=\"296\" data-end=\"530\">When our children were little, they loved spending hours collecting shells on the beach. We still have some of them at home today, where we use them as decorations. They\u2019re lovely reminders of the many family days we spent on Sanibel.<\/p><p data-start=\"532\" data-end=\"730\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Unlike the beaches in Naples, Bonita Springs, or Siesta Key, the sand here is often darker and covered with shells. It\u2019s a place we really enjoy when we want to spend several hours by the water without hotels and large buildings directly behind us.<\/p><p data-start=\"318\" data-end=\"720\">The beach isn\u2019t located right next to the parking lot, so you\u2019ll need to walk for a few minutes to reach it. The path takes you through tropical vegetation before crossing a small wooden bridge. We actually enjoy this part of the visit because it makes arriving at the beach feel like a little adventure. Once you reach the other side, you\u2019ll discover a long, wide stretch of sand surrounded by nature.<\/p><p data-start=\"318\" data-end=\"720\"><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170513_111923.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8667\" src=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170513_111923.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p><p data-start=\"722\" data-end=\"1004\">Bowman\u2019s Beach is also one of the most popular places on Sanibel for shelling. The sand is often covered with shells, so take your time walking along the shoreline and looking for your favorites. Water shoes can be useful because some areas can be uncomfortable to walk on barefoot.<\/p><p data-start=\"1006\" data-end=\"1346\">The park has picnic areas, barbecue grills, shaded tables, restrooms, outdoor showers, a playground, and nature trails. It\u2019s a good place to bring lunch and spend a large part of the day, especially with children. Just remember to bring water, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent, as the walk and the more natural areas can get hot and buggy.<\/p><p data-start=\"1006\" data-end=\"1346\"><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170513_112136.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8668\" src=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/20170513_112136.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" \/><\/a><\/p><p data-start=\"1348\" data-end=\"1600\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Bowman\u2019s Beach may not have the perfectly white, powdery sand of Siesta Key, but that isn\u2019t really why you come here. Although you cannot climb it, the lighthouse remains one of the island\u2019s most recognizable landmarks and is a lovely place to photograph.<\/p><p data-start=\"2992\" data-end=\"3091\"><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG-20170513-WA0024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8685\" src=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG-20170513-WA0024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p><p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"282\" data-end=\"577\">The beach has a very different feel from Bowman\u2019s Beach. It is located near the Sanibel Causeway, where the waters of the Gulf meet San Carlos Bay. From the beach, you can often see boats passing in the distance, and it\u2019s also a pleasant place to walk, look for shells, or simply enjoy the view.<\/p><p data-start=\"579\" data-end=\"791\">A nature trail winds through the surrounding vegetation and offers another way to explore the area. Visitors will also find picnic tables, restrooms, and outdoor showers, making it easy to spend a few hours here.<\/p><p data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"1056\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">We particularly like Lighthouse Beach because it combines several things in one visit: the historic lighthouse, the beach, the surrounding nature, and beautiful coastal views. It\u2019s an easy and worthwhile stop, especially if it\u2019s your first time on Sanibel Island.<\/p><p data-start=\"3093\" data-end=\"3201\"><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/20190113_154919.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13693\" src=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/20190113_154919.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p><p data-start=\"3093\" data-end=\"3201\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/tpwidg.com\/content?trs=528564&#038;shmarker=728147&#038;type=visitor&#038;theme=small-theme1&#038;powered_by=true&#038;campaign_id=153&#038;promo_id=4652\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"au2yro\" data-start=\"3340\" data-end=\"3359\">Tarpon Bay Beach<\/h3><p data-start=\"22\" data-end=\"264\">Tarpon Bay Beach is another lovely place to enjoy the quieter side of Sanibel Island. It is generally less busy than Lighthouse Beach and has a relaxed, natural atmosphere that makes it perfect for a peaceful walk or a few hours by the water.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Beach-a-1024x538.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13697\" src=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Beach-a-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"368\" \/><\/a><\/p><p data-start=\"266\" data-end=\"581\">From the parking area, a short path leads directly to the beach. Once there, you\u2019ll find a long stretch of sand where you can swim, search for shells, watch birds, or simply relax away from the more crowded areas. Like many beaches on Sanibel, the shoreline can be covered with shells, so water shoes may be useful.<\/p><p data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"787\">Tarpon Bay Beach is also a beautiful place to watch the sunset. We love the simple, undeveloped feel of this beach: no large resorts or buildings behind you, just sand, vegetation, and the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p><p data-start=\"789\" data-end=\"993\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Restrooms and outdoor showers are available near the parking area. Parking is limited, however, so arriving earlier is a good idea, particularly on weekends and during the busier winter and spring months.<\/p><p data-start=\"789\" data-end=\"993\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/tpwidg.com\/content?trs=528564&#038;shmarker=728147&#038;locale=en&#038;powered_by=true&#038;bg_color=%23fad130&#038;font_color=%23333333&#038;button_color=%2300a200&#038;button_font_color=%23ffffff&#038;button_text=Search&#038;rounded_corners=false&#038;benefits=false&#038;dc_powered_by=false&#038;supplier_logos=false&#038;campaign_id=117&#038;promo_id=3873\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"1su03m\" data-start=\"3510\" data-end=\"3525\">Turner Beach<\/h3><p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"18\" data-end=\"293\">Located just before the bridge connecting Sanibel to Captiva, Turner Beach is smaller than many of the other beaches on the islands. Parking is limited, which can make finding a space difficult at busy times, but it also means the beach often feels quieter once you\u2019re there.<\/p><p data-start=\"295\" data-end=\"528\">It\u2019s a lovely place to walk along the shore, look for shells, fish, or simply sit and enjoy the view. The currents around the bridge can be strong, so this isn\u2019t necessarily the best spot for swimming, especially with young children.<\/p><p data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"850\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Turner Beach is also one of our favorite places to watch the sunset. The view over the Gulf is beautiful, and the bridge and rocks give the landscape a different feel from Sanibel\u2019s other beaches. If you\u2019re spending the day exploring Sanibel and Captiva, it\u2019s a perfect place to make your final stop before heading home.<\/p><p data-start=\"3605\" data-end=\"3750\"><script async src=\"https:\/\/tpwidg.com\/content?trs=528564&#038;shmarker=728147&#038;locale=en_us&#038;sustainable=false&#038;deals=false&#038;border_radius=5&#038;plain=true&#038;powered_by=true&#038;promo_id=2693&#038;campaign_id=84\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><h2 data-section-id=\"171zj6i\" data-start=\"3752\" data-end=\"3779\">Exploring Sanibel by Bike<\/h2><p data-start=\"38\" data-end=\"239\">Sanibel is one of the best places in Florida to explore by bike. The island has more than 25 miles of bike paths connecting beaches, residential neighborhoods, nature preserves, shops, and restaurants.<\/p><p data-start=\"241\" data-end=\"491\">Cycling is a lovely way to discover a quieter side of the island and notice places you might miss when driving. The paths take you through tropical vegetation and peaceful neighborhoods, giving you a much better feel for Sanibel\u2019s relaxed atmosphere.<\/p><p data-start=\"493\" data-end=\"840\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">It can also be a practical option during the busy season, when traffic is heavier and beach parking fills up quickly. You can rent bikes on the island for a few hours or for the entire day. Just remember that Florida\u2019s heat and humidity can make cycling difficult in the middle of the day, so start early, bring plenty of water, and use sunscreen.<\/p><h1 data-section-id=\"do3to4\" data-start=\"4096\" data-end=\"4142\">J.N. \u201cDing\u201d Darling National Wildlife Refuge<\/h1><p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_8194.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5451\" src=\"https:\/\/floridaandbeyond.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_8194-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8194\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p><p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"50\" data-end=\"317\">One of the places you shouldn\u2019t miss on Sanibel Island is the J.N. \u201cDing\u201d Darling National Wildlife Refuge. This large protected area is part of the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the United States and provides a habitat for more than 245 species of birds.<\/p><p data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"692\">The easiest way to explore it is along the four-mile Wildlife Drive, which you can travel by car, bike, or on foot. Take your time and stop at the different observation areas\u2014you may see herons, pelicans, egrets, ibis, roseate spoonbills, turtles, alligators, and sometimes manatees. Of course, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, which is also part of the experience.<\/p><p data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"992\">There are also walking trails, canoe launches, guided tram tours, and opportunities to explore the surrounding waters by kayak or paddleboard.
